Notorious Israeli entrepreneur Dan Gertler has, yet again, found himself embroiled in a well-publicised scandal concerning the DRC and its natural resource wealth. Gertler, who expanded his business interests to the Congo in the mid 1990s, quickly built close links to the ruling Kabila family that have helped facilitate the rise of his billion-dollar business portfolio. Quick to captialise on these ties, Och-Ziff Capital Management Group LLC – a US hedge fund and asset management firm – sought to back Gertler’s Congo-based ventures in return for a share in the considerable profits. Additionally, the London-based Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC) has also been accused of pursuing a similar strategy.
